"No singing at the table!" My siblings and I were constantly being reprimanded for breaking that rule. We sang all the time… throughout every day. I recently asked a sampling of our Early Childhood Music families if their children sing around the house. The answer was a resounding, "No!"
Sing, sing, sing! 119 times in 102 verses, the Bible uses the words sing. Most of those uses are commands to sing. Passages like Psalm 149 instruct us to sing with instruments like tambourines, pipes and strings.
This article is about the power of singing… the benefit to God (He likes it! Psalm 149:6) and the benefits to us. Singing enhances us… body, soul and spirit.
Listen to this list…
- Singing and listening to music slows down and equalizes brain waves, reducing stress.
- Music affects our heartbeat, pulse rate and blood pressure. A slower heartbeat creates less physical tension and stress, calms the mind and helps the body heal itself.
- Singing and movement reduces muscle tension and improves body movement and coordination.
- Mom's voice singing is the number one brain function enhancer for prenatal babies.
- Singing affects endorphin levels, and boosts the immune system.
- Music produces euphoria, a heightened sense of well-being. We also know it as the ‘runner’s high.’ When we sing praises to our God it changes our focus, raises our sights and lifts our spirit as we focus on One mightier.
- Playing the piano with singing creates the highest level of brain function enhancement, lasting four or five hours for adults and the rest of their life for preschool children when their brain is wiring.
- Singing in the car helps pass the time, calms and unites the family.
- Singing while you are driving actually is the best medium to keep you alert, beyond music or talk radio.
- Singing affects the need for medication and actually relieves pain.
- Singing words to chants and rhymes enhances learning. How did you learn your ABC’s? Sing it and you’ll never forget it!!!
It is just like our God to demand that we sing…and then to make us, His creations, so that when we are obedient to that command, we are the benefactors.
Come on, everybody…let’s sing, sing, sing!!
